THE ADVISORY // ISSUE NO. 001
CLASSIFICATION: OPEN ACCESS
THE COST OF IMMEDIATE REACTION
There is a version of every man who wakes up before his judgment does.
Unfortunately, he already has access to his phone.
Urgency is one of emotion’s better disguises. It tells you that if you do not respond immediately, you will lose control of the situation.
More often, the immediate response is how control gets surrendered.
The first message may be honest, but honesty is not the same as readiness. A feeling can be valid and still be an unqualified spokesperson. Anger speaks fluently without knowing the facts. Rejection writes excellent opening statements and terrible conclusions.
Not every emotion deserves access to the send button.
Delay is not weakness. It is editorial control.
Drink the coffee. Read the message again. Ask whether your reply protects your dignity, communicates something necessary, or simply attempts to make another person feel the discomfort currently sitting with you.
A gentleman is not a man without emotion.
He is a man who does not appoint every emotion Director of Communications.
